Process for hiring overseas critical workers and applying for their work visas.

In March this year SAANZ prepared its workforce strategy and submitted it to Immigration NZ (INZ) with the endorsement of Tourism NZ.  Yesterday the Government announced that the industry has been allocated 275 work visas for critical highly skilled workers.  This number includes 30 workshop and boot fitter technicians.  There is a process to follow for those retailers who want to employ a technician from overseas.

The decision was based on the following:

  • Filling highly skilled roles with overseas workers will enable the industry to operate safely and at full capacity for the upcoming winter season.
  • Roles include snow sports instructors and technicians, ski patrol and snow safety, groomer operators, lift technicians.
  • The industry has agreed to pay the median wage for these roles (being highly skilled). This was non-negotiable for INZ.
  • The industry will work together to allocate these as required. Allocations for each role may change as we work through the process
  • As an industry, we will continue to work on our workforce strategy of attracting and training New Zealanders into these roles.
